The Deus Ex games aren't necessarily completely free roam. Each mission takes place in a fairly large area that you can explore to your heart's content, so in that way it is somewhat free roam, but it's not one continuous open world. There's constantly multiple ways to go about doing things, whether you want to go in guns blazing or take a stealthy approach, utilizing security systems or even stack boxes to climb onto roofs and through windows.
